Two weeks
ago, Nintendo had a massive week with the July 21st launch of
Splatoon 2. Then, last week, Nintendo seemingly took a bit of a break, as it
was a very slow trickle of releases, primarily very small indie games for the
Switch. The next two weeks look to ramp things up a bit, as Nintendo is getting
support from all fronts, indie, third party, and first party games. While the
next two weeks don’t look the throw out any major releases or set any records,
there are a few games worth taking note of. Oh, and it is worth mentioning that
next week does see the return of a beloved, little blue hedgehog…

Flip
Wars: $TBA eshop, puzzle/strategy (August 10th)
o
This
is an interesting title. Flip Wars started out as a small indie title that
Nintendo decided to pick up and purchase the publishing rights to. If this
sounds familiar, it is likely because Nintendo did the same thing with their
hit Switch launch title, Snipperclips. Like Snipperclips, Flip Wars is a multiplayer
focused game that can be played locally using split joy-cons. However, rather
than focusing on puzzle co-op, Flip Wars is focused more on using strategy in
order to outwit and defeat your opponents. This title could be best described
as a Bomberman like game, but instead of dropping bombs, you flip plates on the
ground in order to turn them to your color and knock out opponents. While not
much is known about this title yet, anything with Nintendo’s name attached to
it is worth taking note of!

Ironcast:
$12.99 USD eshop, puzzle/strategy (August 10th)
·
Phantom
Trigger: $14.99 USD eshop, action/adventure (August 10th)
·
Troll
and I: $29.99 USD USD eshop/retail, action/adventure (August 15th)
o
Troll
and I is a title that previously released for all other platforms back in
March, and is now getting its chance on the Switch. While this game won’t be
winning any major rewards, it is still a title that received positive reviews
and tells an emotional story. Also, the entire game can be played through with
a friend via split-screen co-op, which is a major selling point for any Switch
title. Be sure to check out reviews and gameplay of this one for yourself and
see if it is a game that interests you!

Sonic
Mania: $19.99 USD eshop/retail, 2D platforming (August 15th)
o
The
blue blur, Knuckles, and Tails are back for another classic 2D adventure! Sonic
Mania was meant to come out much earlier in 2017, but a set of delays pushed
the date back. For Nintendo fans, this was a fortunate event, as the game is
now getting a simultaneous launch across all platforms, including the Switch.
The jury is still out on whether or not Sonic Mania will be able to recapture
the magic of the classic Sonic games. However, just seeing Sonic back in his 2D
form is enough to get most fans beyond excited.

Elminage
Original: $19.99 USD eshop, RPG (August 10th)
o
Serving
as the lone 3DS title for the next two weeks, Elminage Original is a half price
game that may appeal to classic RPG fans. Offering dungeons, huge bosses, a
classic leveling up system, and 16 classes to choose from, this game might just
be worth its twenty dollar price tag.
Wii U
·
This
is another dead week for Nintendo’s previous home console, as there is still
nothing coming out for this system.
That’s it
for this week! The WII U is continuing its slow departure into its grave, and
the 3DS is enjoying a bit of an off week after much recent success. The Switch,
on the other hand, is continuing to grow its already great library with support
from numerous developers, both indie and third party. There’s no denying that
the show stopper for the next two weeks is sonic mania, but don’t be so quick
to overlook smaller titles like Flip Wars. As always, find the game that’s right
for you and enjoy!
